crazy for tangerine!

So, tangerine is the color of the year.

Pantone says so.

I believe it because I was already having a love affair with this vibrant color. I don't know why. It must be something in the air...

This is what Pantone says about Tangerine Tango

"...a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.
“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

How does Pantone determine its colors for the season? I researched it a bit and this is what I came up with: "Annually Pantone will declare a particular color "Color of the Year". The color is chosen to purportedly connect with the zeitgeist; for example the press release declaring Honeysuckle the color of 2011 said "In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues."[11]

From Pantone's web site there is this description of all the colors of the Sring 2012 palette:

For spring 2012 designers are inspired by diverse influences, showcasing a range of
styles and lifestyles, from free and playful and light and breezy, to contemporary classics. Colors likewise reflect these differing moods, encapsulating vivid brights, soft muted tones and fun-loving pastels.

"Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute^®. "They

I am blogging from my new YIKES home at Seven Arts Gallery in Ellsworth Maine. Located in the Maine Grind building where you can stop in for a cup of coffee or something to eat and browse the lovely artisan made items in the Gallery.

Its so nice to have a place to permanently show my work. Every week I have a gallery day where I am in the gallery replenishing my items and tweaking my display.

I am surrounded by big windows that light up all the gorgeous items made by my fellow artist/owners of the gallery. Here everyone pools their talent and resources to create something bigger and better than themselves.

As the season comes to a close I wanted to stop and thank all my wonderful customers and friends for all their support of my work. Its been a great year and I have had a wonderful time meeting and greeting everyone. Hope to see you all again.

Though I plan to be doing fewer shows and have less gallery representation in the upcoming year, you can watch for my work in SevenArts Gallery in Ellsworth. I will be one of the seven artists to show in the gallery full time and I will be present in the gallery one day a week. It is so exciting to have a home for YIKES and to be part of a group of dedicated and talented artists. Watch for the exciting new work that I will be showing there on a regular basis. The gallery is located in the Maine Grind building on Main Street in Ellsworth. Stop by and see what's happening in this beautiful little gallery!

Year's End ~ feeling thankful!
I love feeling all snuggled in while the snow falls so lovely outside. Today has been a full day of preparing pies, shoveling snow and working in the studio to get ready for the last shows of the year

A Moment of Thanks
Its been a strange and wonderful year in the studio and at the shows. I have met some really great people and renewed aquantainces. I am ever thankful for this art filled life I lead and the many places it takes me. I owe a huge thank you to my husband Anthony who puts up with all my show shenanigans! I am also very thankful to my many loyal and appreciative customers. When they go out of their way to purchase something special for themselves and/or gifts for others especially from me, I am honored. I work very hard to put out a beautiful product that exceeds all expectations and brings some happiness to the wearer. A customer said recently to me that the women on her list are disappointed when they don't get their YIKES! earrings!

Last Bangor Area Show for 2011
This friday through Sunday (Nov 25, 26 & 27) I will be at the 6th annual open studio at Essentially Felt in Glenburn. The hours are 11-4 daily. Back in Portland
I will be finishing up the show season in Portland this year at the SEA Show at the East End Community School. This is a lively show with lots of fun work. I thought things couldn't get any busier here in the studio but boy was I mistaken. Somehow it seems I am continually adding more accounts, shows etc. "Just one more" seems like a good idea till the time comes to deliver! Then whamo, it comes due in no time. I seem to have been able to hit all my marks so far...

Coming up in November will be the very popular Designing Woman show at Husson College. This show is a never miss for many in the Bangor area. I sell slew of earrings here as Christmas gifts. Ask me about my Yikes earring buyer card. If you are nutty about Yikes earrings and buy them frequently then you need one!

Currently I am working on a good sized Close Buy order. They have featured 4 different Yikes styles of earrings. Close Buy is a school fund raising catalog made up of Maine artisan made items. No cheesy gift wrap or junky Chinese do dads.

November will also have me at the Gifted Hand show in Ellsworth and the Open studio at Essentially Felt. More info on the dates and times for all my shows is listed in the schedule.

"Bird Bangles" polymer, seed beads, copper, brass, enamel on copper

Really excited about new work coming out of the studio these days. Hardly time to do anything else!

"Turquoise and Blue Blossom Set", polymer, sterling silver, enameled copper, Swarovski crystal.

Really sweet set that I have been wanting to create for such a long time. Finally everything came together and I got it done. The little earring blossoms remind me of Fuschia flowers in their shape.

"Fox" and "Black Bird" buttons. Expanding my buttons into new shapes.

Now that I'm a knitter (wow, really, I can knit!) I am really interested in buttons! These two are fairly large and have a loop on the back to sew them on. Would be so great on a chunky sweater.

Ornament Magazine does article on polymer clay history

Ornament Magazine has done a really nice article in the July issue on the history and pioneers in polymer clay jewelry. Really nice to see this as we polymer artists still struggle with the perception that it is not a "real" medium and not always taken seriously. With polymer, like other mediums, it is what happens in really skilled and creative hands that determines the worth of the piece-not the medium itself.

The story, Polymer Clay, A Modern Medium Comes of Age is nicely illustrated with a time line and images from the polymer heavyweights such as Kathleen Dunstin, Ford and Forlano etc.

I have been working my butt off these days and loving every bit of it!!

Really feel like I am doing the best work of my life and its so exciting. I can't wait to show everyone what I have been up to. You can see what I have been up to at the Belfast Art in the Park show July 9-10.

I have been really inspired by the upcoming Grand Fashion Show, Aug 4, in Ellsworth. Its my first fashion show and I am really psyched for it. Have no idea really what's involved but I am looking forward to the challenge.

Moving on to new work
Have been very busy in the studio working with some really great color combos. Loving avacado green, orange and a sweet smooth mellow yellow. The cuffs above offer a little peak at what's been cooking.

I must say that I absolutely love these fashion colors for the season. Notice the spot of turquoise in the model's shoes on the left. Love that!

Maybe you, like I, can't afford a whole new wardrobe to express your fashionista self but perhaps a large YIKES! cuff in the colors of the season will pop your wardrobe fashion forward.

Modeling the finished necklace

Big thanks to everyone who has donated to Heifer International and the Do Something WiLD campaign! Your name has been entered and tomorrow is the day I pick a winner!

Time has really flown by and wow I thought this would be easy! It has been far more work than I had anticipated. Sadly, so far the amount raised has fallen far short of my anticipated goal of $500. There is still this evening and into the day tomorrow so I am hopeful that it can be done! So far we have raised $240.

Though it may not seem like a lot of money to us, to a struggling family it can mean the difference between life and death. One of the things I was most interested in was the education opportunities that Heifer opens up to women. When women are educated the the results are huge.

Do Something WiLD!
Fun Fundraising for Heifer International

Ideas tend to come to me in a very sudden way. I then proceed to jump in, both feet first. That is exactly what has happened and I now find myself with several very large projects going.

First of all I am formulating and working out the details of doing a fund raiser for Heifer International. If you are unfamiliar with Heifer they go something like this. You present a cow to a family, they in turn get milk from the cow, the cow goes on to have a calf and now there are two cows. They family now has extra milk and can sell what they don't need. They then have another calf which they then give away to another family and the cycle gets repeated. Building up the village to sustainablitiy. This is a simplified version and you can read more about it on their website Hei fer.org. Anyway...my husband and I have been giving small donations over the years to Heifer hence we receive their publication. I opened it the other day to find a campaign they are doing in April call Do Something WiLD. The anacronym stands for Women in Livestock Development and the focus of this campaign is on the work Heifer does in empowering and enabling women: one of the most effective tools for a peaceful, prosperous society. The graphics in the ad caught my eye and seemed to relate to YIKES! Studio. I thought, this is something I want to get involved with, but how?? Create a necklace, sell a chance to win it and donate all proceeds to Do Something WiLD !! That was it! So last night I set about (til midnight) the beginning stages of the necklace creation of which I will post pictures.

My next big project is my web presence. I have been needing to update the darn web site for a while. Most everything on there has sold (not really a bad problem to have)! Adding the ablitly to shop online was a big goal. How to do it without laboriously adding code to each item was the issue. Well, not anymore people! Seems there is now a whole slew of site builders that have everything so incredibly intigrated that it has become almost seamless. I connected up with a site called YOLA and it is so easy to use. I want to wish everyone a very warm and happy holiday season. At this time I want to thank everyone for being so supportive of my work and choosing gifts for your friends and family from YIKES! Studio. I am truly humbled by the thought that you have chosen to spend your hard earned and precious dollars with me and have found treasures and "perfect" gifts from amongst my offerings. That I have been able to connect with so many people through my art makes me feel very blessed. I hope to be able to continue to offer some really spectacular pieces and expand into all sorts of areas creatively in the coming year.

I have some really neat ornaments at the Center for Maine Craft in Gardener Maine. They are polymer clay and Swarovski crystal with some fun wire and bead work. Each ornament comes with a little card explaining what it is. These where so fun to make and each is one-of-a-kind. They are so different from the usual Christmas ornament! Stop by while traveling I95 and check them and all the other beautiful works out.

Projects
Over the winter I hope to complete my wholesale catalog and get my work out into new areas across the country.

Soon the YIKES! web site will have a bit of an overhaul and update. Hopefully it will be working a bit better as there have been a few issues with images not loading the the contact page not always working.

It has been a most splendid fall here in Maine and what an opportunity to revel in color and nature! The woods have been teaming with mushrooms and incredible colors. These always have a way of finding their way into my work. In addition to all the wonderful fall colors I have worked with, my palette choice has lately turned to reds. I have really enjoyed exploring this crazy color. Especially interesting to me is pairing cool-ish reds with yellow-ish greens. My reds have been so bright that it has been difficult to photograph them!

Of course I will still be offering a wide range of colors and shapes to choose from. Something for absolutely everyone!

Clip-ons and Posts Available You asked for them and now they're here. I have a limited but nice selection of clip-on earrings and post style earrings. The clip-ons have a very good quality silver plated clip. I had hoped to go with solid sterling silver but the cost was prohibitive. The post earrings are surgical steel. All findings are soundly embedded into the clay to ensure there is no future glue failure.

November will be a busy month here. To finish out 2010 I have a show every weekend. Hope you will stop by one of these wonderful shows and have a look at my tempting new pieces!

Wanted to post a quick note that I have added a couple new shows.

This week I will be at "Art in the Garden" to benefit the Bangor Human Society. It will take place this Wednesday, September 8th, 4-9pm. 30 or so craftspeople will be set up in the glowing gardens and greenhouses. Pairings of Winterport will provide tantalizing food and wine. This is the first show at the garden center and sounds like a lovely evening and a great way to start your holiday shopping in a relaxed environment.

Also added recently to my schedule the Artfull Gift Show at Point Lookout in Northport. This Premier Arts and Crafts event features the work of more than 40 selected New England based artists and artisans. November 19-21, Friday Nov. 19 from 5-8 pm; Saturday & Sunday Nov. 20-21 from 10am -4pm

This holiday season I will have my work in the Gifted Hand's Artisan Gallery in Ellsworth, Maine. I will be present in the Gallery on Tuesdays Nov 23-Dec 28. The Gallery will be open everyday through Dec. I will not be doing any shows in Dec. so this will be a great way to purchase from me and other exceptional artisans.

I am happy to have one of my images used in the video advertising this weekend's beautiful art and craft show at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth.

The necklace is called "Sea Candy" and features colorful organic "sea" forms of polymer clay with sterling silver wire and Swarovski Austrian Crystals. It has a matching coiled pin. The necklace and pin will be for sale at the show this weekend.

Last weekend I was at the Belfast Art in the Park show. Usually I love this show and have great sales but this weekend the weather was absolutely horrendous. I have never seen such a downpour. Just when I thought it couldn't rain any harder it did! I learned that my tent is not waterproof in such conditions. Luckily today was sunny and warm and I was able to dry everything out.

I love my little clay oven, but lately it's just been sitting there empty while I bake my creations on a rock outside my studio. Well, not quite- but it has been a little tropical lately, and my jewelry colors have become more tropical too, with lots of lusciously sweet, bright pastels and jewel tones.

I've been working on a variety of new earrings incorporating sprays of glittering color, translucent layers of delicate greens and purples, colors that shimmer in the sun. These are fresh, delicate designs.They are waterproof, strong and light too, making them the natural choice for a really comfortable summer accessory!

I am jazzed to offer these new designs at the Naples for the Arts festival on July 30-13. This show is Saturday, July 31 on the Naples Causeway, from 9:00 a.m.- 7:00 p.m. The show is hosting a myriad of activities to entertain people of all ages.

I've sent out dozens of earrings in every color to Sagegrass Gallery in Bar Harbor, and a number of beautiful disk necklaces and cute new earrings to Sea of Cotton in Bar Harbor. These shops are great places to discover beautiful accessories and art!

Last weekend I was at the Old Port Festival in Portland. Thanks to everyone who for stopped by my booth. It was great seeing my many former customers and wonderful to meet new ones. The weather was barely cooperative but in the end we did mange to stay dry!

I am delighted to be showing my work at the Lupine Festival, this coming Sat. (June 19) in Deer Isle, Maine. The 2010 Lupine Fest is the eighth annual celebration of Island springtime. In addition to local crafters, there will be garden tours, local foods supper, open studios, boat-plane-schooner trips, a quilt show, and kids' activities. What a beautiful way to spend a day!

Come by the Center for Maine Craft in Gardiner at the West Gardiner Service Plaza, or stop in at New Cargoes, "Blue Hill's Little Department Store." And last but not least, Chapter Two in Corea, Maine is carrying my work too.
